Living
our faith through service
to those who need a friend
AIDS Ministry
Fairlington's AIDS Ministry works with the Northern Virginia AIDS Ministry (NOVAM) to provide support (transportation, etc.)
for persons with HIV/AIDS and their families. We also educate our communities about
HIV/AIDs to reduce the fears and prejudices that surround the
disease.
Volunteers Needed: Transportation providers, people with public speaking skills for education and outreach, child care providers for the "Playcare Center" located at FUMC.
Coordinators: F. Bodsford CFC Number: 8284
Fairlington-In-Touch
Under the FIT program of congregational care, volunteers visit members
and friends of FUMC who are unable to attend church for extended periods
of time and help them feel that they are still a part of the church. In
addition to visits, other support includes making phone calls, sending
birthday cards, and (where feasible) arranging transportation to the
church. The vounteers for this ministry meet periodically to share
ideas, offer support to one another, and provide information about the
people they are visiting.
The Chancel Choir sends small ensembles to provide music at Christmas or
at other times.
The Associate Minister maintains a list of people included in this
program and decides on additions and deletions from the list.
Volunteers Needed: The FIT Coordinator recruits volunteers and assigns
one volunteer to each person in the program. To volunteer or to receive
more information about this program, contact the FIT Coordinator.

Volunteers Needed: Volunteers are needed to write letters, read, listen, love, and be a friend to residents. Scheduling is flexible. As much time as you want to give.

Stephen Ministry
The Stephen Ministry program at Fairlington provides support to persons who are in crisis or going through difficulties and need "a listening ear." Volunteers complete fifty hours of extensive training in learning how to be an effective Christian caregiver. Training topics include: first helping contact, how to identify and help with feelings; how to listen; telecare resources; assertiveness; confidentiality; when and how to make referrals; crisis theory and intervention; stress of hospitalization; divorce; grief; death and dying; depression; suicide; aging; childbirth, etc. Upon completion of training, our Stephen Ministers are commissioned during worship and are assigned an individual care receiver. Fairlington's Stephen Ministers experience the joy of caring for another in our church or community as well as the friendship of other Stephen Ministers. Fairlington's Stephen Ministers show the love of Christ through caring for others!
