Living our faith through service
to children and schools

Alexandria Tutoring Consortium
Tutors from various churches in Alexandria  volunteer to work one-on-one with first and second graders to improve h their reading and writing skills. The Alexandria Tutoring Consortium is an Alexandria-based interdenominational outreach in the Alexandria Public School System.

After completing their own training, volunteers are matched with children through congregation-based and school-based coordinators.

Volunteers Needed: People who have a love of reading and a love of children and are willing to give 30 minutes three times each week.

Coordinator: L. Staples

Camp Highroad
Camp Highroad, operated by Northern Virginia Camps and Conferences Corporation of the United Methodist Church, is located on a beautiful ridge of the Catoctin Range within the Blue Ridge Mountains. These 645 acres of rolling hills, woodlands, and farmlands have become the setting for outdoor Christian encounters for young and old alike. Summer campers and year-round retreat groups develop leadership and interests through relaxed fellowship and recreation in the out-of-doors.

FUMC volunteers have participated in the Camp Highroad Spring work day (set in May); the Adopt-a-Cabin program (contribute money to rehabilitate a cabin, or donate time and materials); and volunteered as counselors at the summer camp.

Volunteers Needed: In addition to camp participants, volunteer opportunities exist for clean-up days and for financial contributions toward camp scholarships.

Coordinator: A. Baker

United College Ministries
FUMC members can serve as part of this ministry by participating in one program known as the "Listening Post." The Listening Post gives college students, faculty and staff an opportunity to discuss problems, successes or anything they feel like talking about in a caring, non-judgmental environment. FUMC volunteers serve two hours a week at one of the NOVA Community College Campuses or at George Mason University. To learn more about the Listening Post and other United College Ministries Programs, contact M. Stallard.

Volunteers Needed: Offer 2 hours per week to the "Listening Post."
