Welcoming. Nurturing. Serving.
“I'm that little bit of hope. When my back's against the ropes.”
~ R. Kelly “The World’s Famous”
I love the song “The World’s Famous.” Many of us have had a time when it feels like our back is against the ropes or against a wall and there are biblical stories of people with no way out of a situation. Just think of the Israelites as they fled Pharaoh only to be trapped between Pharaoh’s army and the Red Sea.
In moments when we feel like we can’t handle anything else, people may say to us, or we might say to ourselves, “God won’t give you more than you can handle.” However, that phrase is nowhere in the Bible. The Bible does say, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”(Psalm 46:1).
I like the song “The World’s Famous,” because I imagine it describing God. God who is that little bit of hope. When you have felt like your back is against the ropes, how has God been your hope, your refuge and strength?
