Did you know that there are United Methodist churches, not just in the United States but also throughout Africa, Asia, and Europe? We are a worldwide church! I found this map, with the dark-colored countries showing that over 12 million United Methodists worship there. United Methodists are also in mission in more than 136 countries worldwide; and that is just United Methodists.
Presbyterians, Catholics, Lutherans, Pentecostals, Baptists, thousands of other denominations, and even those without denominations also gather throughout the world to worship. Christians meet both in public and in secret. Some meet in freedom while others gather under threat of persecution and death. Some worship with organ music, others with simple singing, others with percussion instruments, and others in quiet. People gather to worship in churches, homes, huts, and in God’s creation.
Today we remember that, although as Christians we are spread throughout the world and worship in ways that are as diverse as the cultures that shape us, we also are united through the sacrament of communion. As we celebrate World Communion Sunday, we know that this meal reaches back through the centuries, connecting us with those who are no longer with us. The communion table reaches around the world. How does this understanding of communion shape the way you see community?
