This artwork from c.e.1310 can be found on the ceiling fresco of Kariye Camii in what was the Church of the Holy Savior of Chora in Istanbul Turkey, now a museum. It is a picture of the resurrection, or in Greek, anastasis (up-rising). You can see the risen Christ in the center in white, as he rises reaching out equally to Adam and Eve, lifting them from their graves. Looking on are John the Baptist, King David on the left, and various saints on the right. This artwork is called an icon, painted in a traditional style and used as a devotional aid.
When you look at the risen Christ, what brings you joy? In what ways today is Christ reaching out to you today to raise you up from death? How does this picture help you imagine “giving up death?”
