Fairlington UMC’s Innovations Weekend

What is Innovations Weekend?

This weekend is a time for the entire congregation to be involved in conversations that will help us discern the next faithful steps that God is calling us to make. Innovations Weekend is part of a pilot program with the Alexandria and Arlington districts called Next Level Innovations (NLI). The events of the weekend will culminate in a worship service that includes a presentation of next level innovations–five or so specific, time-designated goals. After the weekend, our church will prayerfully consider the innovations and if we accept them, coaching support will be provided for two years to help us reach our goals.

What is Next Level Innovations (NLI)?

NLI is a program designed for churches who have potential for reaching more people in their community.

The program has these goals:

  • discern and clarify God’s will

  • help us to grow in our discipleship and expand our ministries

  • build on the strengths of Fairlington UMC

  • equip us to take the next faithful steps in ministry, so that we accomplish the mission of the church:

To make disciples for

Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

A Prayer for

Fairlington UMC

As we prepare for the innovation weekend we ask that you will pray for Fairlington UMC and the NLI process. Here is a prayer you can use:

Dear God,

We pray…

 for our church,

Fairlington UMC,

as we consider where you are leading us in the Next Level Innovations (NLI) program.

We pray…

for a spirit of wisdom so that we can listen and discern your voice.

We pray…

for a willing heart to step out in faith with boldness and courage.

We pray

that our lives may be open to the Holy Spirit, that we may know your power at work in us, and that we may be the Church you intend us to be.

In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Partners in the Gospel

Partnership is necessary in every successful venture, even when it’s

just for fun. I spent a couple of days at the beach last week with family. One morning My brother-in-law, Jack, got his kite to fly very high in the sky. But how do you keep a kite flying when it’s just you and you need to go do something else? You share it. So I found myself holding the kite string, and marveling at the dancing, rainbow-colored shape above me. It had been years since I had flown a kite. What a joy!

We are partners in sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ, communicating the Good News that are all are loved, accepted, forgiven, welcomed. We step up to help work alongside one another.  We say “yes” when the call is made. We hang in there when it gets hard. We give sacrificially toward…

Reconciling Notes

Immigration 101:

Sunday, September 23, in the Fellowship Hall immediately after the 11:00AM service. Light lunch to be served.

An Overview of U.S. Immigration Law

Do you ever wonder about immigration laws?

What’s a visa, a green card, DACA?

Why immigrants don’t just apply for citizenship?

Would you like to have a better understanding of immigration rules in a non-political format?

Lunch will be followed by Just Neighbors presenting an easy to understand overview of the ins and outs of our country’s very complex immigration system.

Regardless of your political views, this presentation will focus on facts about who is eligible for the various types of legal status in the U.S. and what the various types mean. There will be time for Q&A.

No RSVP necessary, just come! For more information contact Mark Elder

We celebrate Fairlington's 5-year anniversary of becoming a Reconciling Congregation, intentionally welcoming all people as beloved children of God.

Our celebratory theme, “Love in All Colors,” reflects the breadth and diversity of God’s human creation as proclaimed in our church’s welcoming statement.

Check out our audio for personal testimonies from FUMC members. They share how being part of a reconciling congregation has personally affected them and shaped their faith journey.
