From Pastor Mary Beth ~ "Paying Attention"

Amy Oden, in God’s Welcome, tells a story from the ancient desert mothers and fathers of the 3rd century. A novice asked the teacher, “Holy one, is there anything I can do to make myself closer to God?”  The elder replied, “As little as you can do to make the sun rise in the morning.” The novice responded, “Then of what use are these spiritual disciplines of prayer?” The teachers answered, “To make sure that you are awake when the sun rises.”

There are many good reasons to pay attention to life around us. It creates a space where we can experience God, and where we can be prepared for the future as it comes. Look up. Look around. Look down. It’s a precious life.

I look forward to seeing you Sunday at 9:30 am and 11:00 am as we explore this theme.  We will also welcome our scouts, their leaders and families for Scouting Sunday!

This Sunday is United Methodist Men’s Sunday. The men are excited to be leading worship and we are delighted that member Paul Winfree will be speaking. Paul is an economist and once wrote a paper while in graduate school about church attendance during times of national crisis, economic recessions, and bad weather (FYI, people are less likely to attend when it’s sunny or raining). Prove him wrong, whatever the weather, by joining us for worship Sunday at 9:30 or 11:00.

We celebrate Fairlington's 5-year anniversary of becoming a Reconciling Congregation, intentionally welcoming all people as beloved children of God.

Our celebratory theme, “Love in All Colors,” reflects the breadth and diversity of God’s human creation as proclaimed in our church’s welcoming statement.

Check out our audio for personal testimonies from FUMC members. They share how being part of a reconciling congregation has personally affected them and shaped their faith journey.
